Words of Congrats Tom Murtagh Photos How it was done........Round 1 Convincing start for Colmcille Colmcille 2-10 St. Columba's 0-5 The meeting of last year’s Senior finalists versus the Intermediate champions on Sunday evening was the fare that heralded the end of the first full weekend of the Senior Championships in Longford. If truth be told this was a rather lacklustre affair which was in keeping with the stuttering tone of the Championship thus far, with nothing on display from the four games to excite; aesthetically at least. However the visual components of the game are unlikely to trouble Ciaran Brady and his charges at this stage as they are now safely into the second round draw. Mullinalaghta never really seemed up to the challenge of this local derby, and although they were not lacking in spirit, they simply couldn’t translate this to scores. Colmcille got off to a flying start, notching up four points within the opening ten minutes of the game. Anthony Gormley opened their account with a ball lofted high that eventually dropped just inside the posts. Sharpshooter Donie McKeon then grabbed himself a hat-trick for good measure, a brace of frees within his considerable range, and one little gem where Declan C Reilly’s hard work released him inside to take the score. ![]() St. Columba’s missed a gilt-edged chance moments later when, quite uncharacteristically, Donal McElligott opted to take a short ’45, which landed straight into the arms of Padraig Murtagh who couldn’t believe his luck. Resultantly, it was a full fifteen minutes before the half-parish registered their first scores of the game, with McElligott atoning for his earlier blunder by kicking a brace, one a free. Even from the outset, it was obvious that Mullinalaghta were going to struggle to make their argument without the footballing weight carried by the likes of the elder Mulligan brothers and their County Minors. Accordingly, Shane Mulligan was introduced midway through the half in order to inject some fluidity to the side, which he duly did. Following on from this, Donal McElligott landed a point which will be hard equalled in any competition this year. Almost a carbon copy of Brian Kavanagh’s wonder kick from the sideline against Westmeath, and incidentally, Conor Casey came close to completing a similar feat in Saturday’s game, the young centre forward displayed great nerve to split the posts with a fantastic free from the sideline between the 13 and 21 metre lines. From a slow start this left Mullinalaghta just a single point in arrears. However, Colmcille were to strike a killer blow just a short while later when Donie McKeon coolly slotted home a penalty after Thomas Doyle was fouled in the square. After undoing all St. Columba’s good work, Brendan McCabe now got his name on the Colmcille scoresheet, with a well struck point. The final say of the half went to Mullinalaghta, with Ruairi McElligott pointing after excellent interplay between Donal McElligott and the newly introduced JJ Matthews, to leave the score at 1-5 to 0-4 in favour of Colmcille. The second half was almost ten minutes old before we witnessed its first score. Donie McKeon was on target once again from a free, while Thomas Doyle chipped in with a brace, impressive considering he was under pressure and slightly off balance when striking them also. Donal McElligott kept the maroon flag flying with another pointed free, however this was to be their fifth and final point of the game. From here Donie McKeon once again steered the rudder and guided over another point. Thomas Doyle was once again the victim in the square and McKeon spared his neighbours neither mercy nor compassion as he stroked home his second penalty. An ambitious ball towards the Mullinalaghta goalmouth resulted in confusion between Damien McGovern and Conan Brady with the end result a fisted point that would credit Colmcille’s account. The final score of 2-10 to 0-5 really is self-explanatory and what compounds this is the fact that all of Mullinalaghta’s scores bar one came from Donal McElligott, the majority of which were from dead ball situations. And so Colmcille start as they mean to go on, in this the 50th anniversary year of their last Championship victory, while St. Columba’s join Abbeylara and Mostrim as the third team in the draw for the Qualifiers Round One, which will be held this weekend following the Killoe/Ardagh game. Round 2 Colmcille outclass St. Mary's Colmcille 2-11 St. Mary’s 1-1 It was Colmcille who got the scoreboard working just one minute into the game coming from the left boot of Donie McKeon. This was shortly followed by another point when when Declan Farrell made a great run at goal taking on the Granard full backs and tapping it over the bar. A series of wides for Colmcille and a booking for Gary Murtagh filled a 15 minute scoreless period. Thomas Doyle looked very much on form and 15 minutes into the first half the ball was crossed into the box where he was ready to punch Colmcille first goal into the net. Two minutes later Colmcille found themselves with another goal opportunity, John Paul Reilly kept the ball in play with a soccer style back heel along the ground into the box where Declan S. Reilly was there to blast the ball in the back of the Granard net. Declan C. Reilly showed his class when he raised the white flag for Colmcille with his effort from the outside of the boot sailing over the bar. ![]() Twenty five minutes into the half St. Mary’s got their first score of the game when the ball was well worked up as far as David Hynes. Hynes made no mistake in kicking the point. Colmcille wing back Francis Kavanagh got his name on the score board on the 21st minute of the game before John Paul Reilly struck the ball beautifully with the outside of the left peg from a tight angle to leave Colmcille with a commanding 2-6 to 0-1 lead. With 29 minutes gone Thomas Doyle was fouled near the goals. The resulting free was kicked over by Doyle. Glen Kelly gave St. Mary’s a reason to lift their heads before going back into the dressing room when his shot was deflected off a Colmcille player and passed Gavin Tonra. Colmcille’s second half started nicely when Donie McKeon’s free from the 45 metre line taken off the ground found its way over the bar. However Colmcille’s scoring rampage got underway on the 50th minute. Again it was danger man Donie McKeon out in front of his man winning the ball, turning and kicking it over the bar. Declan Farrell added to Colmcille’s lead 23 minutes into the half. The final minutes of the game saw scores from Donie McKeon and John Paul Reilly respectively. St. Marys were simply out classed by a much stronger and fitter Colmcille side. COLMCILLE: Gavin Tonra; Padraig Murtagh, Noel Farrell, Oliver McGivney; Gary Murtagh, Declan C. Quarter Final Lethal combination McKeon and Doyle ease Colmcille through Colmcille 1-13 Fr. Manning Gaels 1-6 Donie McKeon and Tommy Doyle racked up an impressive tally of 1-9, 1-8 of which was from play, to book a semi final appearance against Killoe. The seven point winning margin could have been wider with Colmcille shooting nine wides some from very scoreable positions. Colmcille held a 1-6 to 1-2 advantage at half time and were it not for a scoring blitz that yielded 1-1 in the space of a minute for Fr. Manning Gaels it could have been much worse. WIth twenty minutes played Colmcille were 1-2 to 0-1 ahead until the Drumlish side drew level within sixty seconds. Wing back Cian Brady ran all of 65 metres with the ball and unleashed a bullet to the top corner of the net for a superb individual goal and thirty seconds later team captain Padraic Davis pointed. Davis opened the scoring with a point in the third minute but the lead was short lived as two minutes later McKeon goaled. A great team move involving Declan Farrell, Doyle and McKeon culminated in the corner forward cooly slotting home under P.J. Ginty. Doyle pointed himself in the seventh minute after Declan C Reilly disposed Aaron Quinn inside the twenty metre line. Colmcille could have scored a second goal but Mickey Kelly took Paul McKeon's effort off the line just a minute later. McKeon sent over a close range free with Johnny Kane fouling last years county minor. The Gaels then hit their purple patch to draw level but Colmcille responded well hitting four unanswered points before the break. McKeon hit two points, one from a free, and Farrell fisted over when he won the ball off Liam Gill. McKeon slotted over a fine point with his left with Doyle sending through a great ball to his opposite corner forward. 1-6 to 1-2 at the break. If the Gaels were to get themselves back into the game they needed to start of the second half with a few scores but it was last years beaten finalists who registered the first two points via substitute Gormley and Doyle. McKeon added another spectacular point from way out on the right before Kieran Gill fired over for the Drumlish men. Doyle raised another white flag with Declan C Reilly spreading the ball beautifully for the north Longford club. County minor Pauric Gill got his name on the scoresheet but he had a glorious opportunity for a goal minutes later but his effort just went the wrong side of the post. ![]() Farrell added another point for the eventual winners just before the thirty minute mark to leave his side 1-13 to 1-4 ahead. Kieran Gill was fouled in the small rectangle but David Hannify's effort rattled the crossbar and over the bar. Hannify added another point in stoppage time but there was no denying that Colmcille were worthy of their seven point victory and look on course to recapture the county championship for the first time in fifty years. Semi Final Colmcille scrape into county decider Colmcille 1-6 Emmet Og Killoe 0-8 Colmcille players and supporters will have woken up Sunday morning knowing that they have a second successive county final to look forward to, but their memories may well be shaded by a few flashes of what could have been a nightmare. Colmcille who are trying to bridge a fifty year gap came within a whisker of being sensationally knocked out of the race for the Connolly Cup by a Killoe side who many ranked as total underdogs. Colmcille managed a solitary score in the second half, Tommy Doyle's crucial goal that essentially won the game for the Aughnacliffe men. Killoe had opportunites to force the game to a replay but lady luck and the lack of shooting boots was their ultimate downfall. Many had written off Killoe before this semi final even begun but the Killoe squad and management certainly had other ideas and will feel very hard done by this morning not to be in a county final themselves. Colmcille had missed their own chances particularly in the last quarter when they hit four wides. ![]() McGoldrick found his range from play to raise his and Killoe's second white flag of the encounter with Sean McCormack supplying the final pass. The game continued to descend into a lacklustre affair until Reilly and Donie McKeon combined for McKeon to send over a cracking effort from out on the left. But whatever McKeon could do at one end Sean McCormack could do for Killoe at the other end and less than sixty seconds after McKeon's point, the Killoe man sent over one of his own. The sides were level for a third time when Doyle slotted over another free awith his direct opponent Shane Doherty being penalised for picking the ball off the ground. Colmcille got their noses in fornt through a McKeon free, which was brought forward for dissent, Ciaran Keogh being the guilty culprit for fouling Declan C Reilly. A superb point from McKeon from a near impossible angle just under the stand from within the thirteen metre line put Colmcille two ahead, 0-5 to 0-3, with twenty minutes played. Colmcille looked as if they could run away with it when Gary Murtagh stormed up the middle of the Killoe defence to lay the ball off to Doyle and the accurate corner forward made no mistake in slotting over from close range. Killoe's leading light in attack McGoldrick sent over his third point of the opening half to leave his side trailing 0-6 to 0-4 at the break. The score came following good work between Ger Carberry and John Kiernan and McGoldrick who was in form made no mistake to take a good point. Killoe came out for the second half willing to give it absolutely everything and this they certainly did. They owned possession of the ball for the majority of the second half but unfortunately from a Killoe perspective failed to convert this into scores. Killoe had a wonderful opportunity to get in front but Sean McCormack had his effort brilliantly saved by Gavin Tonra in the Colmcille goal. The very impressive midfielder Paul O' Hara, who had a tremendous game in the Killoe colours, linked up well with McGoldrick and sent over a fine point from all of thirty-five metres. McGoldrick sent over yet another point to restore parity at 0-6 apiece and Killoe certainly had the north Longford men on the ropes at this stage. Killoe edged in front with a point from McCormack off his left on the run and one was beginning to sense it could well be Killoe's day. 0-7 to 0-6 ahead with eleven minutes played in the second half. Colmcille were failing to impose themselves on the game and with Declan C Reilly unable to get on the ball the Colmcille threat was nearly non existant. Substitute Anthony Gormley delivered a long ball into the edge of the Killoe square and McKeon latched on to it only for hhim to see the ball rebound of the crossbar. J.P. Reilly followed up but his sliding shot rolled harmlessly wide. Colmcille ended their thirty minute drought without a score when Doyle sent a low hit effort to the corner of the net. A quick free from Reilly found Doyle in space and the nippy corner forward turned and dispatched his effort confidently past Cillian Burns in the Killoe goal, Colmcille 1-6 to 0-7 ahead with just over five minutes remaining. Eugene Clarke had a glorious opportunity to leave only a point in it but his attempt on goal came back off the post. With just over a minute on the stopwatch remaining McGoldrick dropped another effort into the harms of Tonra. Thirty-one minutes were played when county minor star Michael Quinn landed a terrific point off his left for a superb score, 0-8 to 1-6 with time still to be played. A minute later Quinn had a chance to salvage a draw for the Killoe men but just as he unleashed his shot he lost his footing and his shot once again dropped into the hands of Tonra. It was Killoe's last chance and they failed to get anothet chance to square things up, even though they probably deserved another bite at the cherry. For Colmcille its a county final appearance against Slashers in two weeks time while Killoe will turn their attentions to secure division one status for next year. PETER HANLEY MOTORS Senior Football Championship Final 2008 Colmcille end 50-year famine BY CATHAL CREMER Sunday, 28th September 2008 Colmcille 0-13 Longford Slashers 0-7 Colmcille captured their first Longford SFC title since 1958 with a convincing six point victory over a very disappointing Slashers side in Pearse Park on Sunday last. In a game that was played in ideal conditions in front of a crowd of over five thousand, Colmcille never looked like losing this game although a late Slashers revival could have snatched a draw for the town side. It would have been harsh for Colmcille who were by far the superior team throughout and won all the individual tussles over the field. From Gavin Tonra in goal to Donie McKeon at top of the left, the hunger from last years disappointing defeat to neighbours Dromard was evident and there was no way the men from Aughnacliffe were going to taste defeat for a second consecutive year. For Slashers of course this is their second final defeat in three years but with the taleneted crop of players they have at their exposure, the town team should bounce back in the not too distant future. The winning of this game for Colmcille was ultimately the opening ten minutes, as they raced into an unassailable 0-4 to 0-0 lead. Captain Francis Kavanagh led his troops by example when firing over the opening point in the second minute, with both Declan Reilly’s involved in the build up to the games opener. Donie McKeon notched his first of seven points with a forty five metre free in the fourth minute, Declan C Reilly being the menace for the Slashers defence. Indeed, Slashers were struggling to cope with Reilly’s influence on the game and the small stature of Reilly was controlling the game from midfield. John Paul Reilly raced in behind the Slashers defence in the eight minute only to be dragged down by Michael Brady, the centre back picking up a yellow card for his challenge, and Tommy Doyle made no mistake with the fourteen metre free. Colmcille coasting at 0-3 to 0-0. Doyle added the fourth point on the stroke of ten minutes with another close range free, Cornadrung’s Declan Reilly being fouled by Slashers’ David Sheridan. Sheridan was replaced moments later as a blood sub with Paul Kelly being brought into the action and the returning UCD star certainly did reduce Reilly’ s influence on the game somewhat. Slashers eventually got off the mark in the thirteenth minute with a fantastic point from Adrian Murphy, perhaps the score of the game and certainly Slashers best moment. The pacy wing forward collected possession on the left flank under the stand and turned and sent a cracking effort straight over Tonra’s crossbar, leaving his side trailing by 0-4 to 0-1. Colin Smith could have reduced the gap minutes later but the corner forward saw his effort tail to the right and wide. McKeon slotted over his second free from close range on twenty minutes and it was clear that the Slashers full back line were failing to cope with the Colmcille full forward line particularly Declan Farrell at full-forward. Farrell’s pace was causing a lot if danger and a lot of the times, Slashers had no option but to foul the county man. Colmcille stretched their lead to five points, 0-6 to 0-1, with another Doyle free from close range. Things were beginning to look drastic for the townies as they were failing to make any impact on the game and could not get into their free flowing style of football we had seen in previous rounds of the championship. They did tap on a second point to their first half tally courtesy of Colin Smith, although his younger brother Mark did miss a free on twenty-four minutes that would have left only a goal between the sides. In the second minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half, Kavanagh put JP Reilly through for a fine point to leave Colmcille 0-7 to 0-2 ahead at the break and looking very comfortable. Slashers were only living off scraps in the opening thirty minutes and if they a revival was on the cards, a huge improvement was needed over the interval. Colmcille started the second half like they did the first, with four unanswered points in the opening ten minutes and it was seemed like it was game over at 0-11 to 0-2 with only twenty minutes remaining. Dominic Glennon was harshly penalised for a foul on Farrell and McKeon made certain of the free from the edge of the “D” in the second minute. Slashers had great chance to throw themselves a much needed lifeline but Trevor Clenndenning goal bound shot was somehow spectacularly taken off the line by Padraig Murtagh after a mistake from Tonra. Colmcille’s response was another McKeon free at the Newtown end and this four point turn around was a bitter blow to the all already deflated Slashers outfit. McKeon scored his only point from play in the ninth minute after patient build-up play involving Anthony Gormley and Doyle and when JP Reilly added his second only a minute later, the large Colmcille crowd could feel glory within touching distance. Mark Smith tapped over a free in the eleventh minute for Slashers’ third point, with the former Colmcille player being fouled himself. Gordon Hourican in the Slashers goal then produced a wonderful stop to deny Doyle of a goal with only a quarter of an hour remaining. Glennon was penalised again for a foul on Farrell and McKeon, whose kicking was immaculate all day, sent over from thirty-five metres out. Smith replied with a free at the town end with Kelly being dragged down and Kelly raced through the heart of the Colmcille defence in the twentieth minute but his effort blazed over the bar, 0-12 to 0-5 with ten minutes to play. McKeon hit his seventh and final point of the game for Colmcille with another close range free to cap a fine kicking performance from the deadly accurate corner forward in the twenty-second minute. Adrian Murphy sent over a sweetly struck forty five and Niall Mulligan tapped on a well taken point from play less than sixty minutes later. With just over three minutes remaining Murphy blazed an effort across the face of the Colmcille goal but substitute Philip Dobson was just inches away from directing the ball into the net. Slashers had in fact another goal opportunity but both Colin Smith and Murphy saw their efforts being blocked by a combination of Tonra and the Colmcille defence. David Sheridan was giving his marching orders in injury time to compound Slashers to defeat and bring to an end an extremely disappointing display for the Slashers men. Slashers just did not perform on the day but take nothing away from this Colmcille side who deservedly got their hands on the Sean Connolly Cup for the first time in fifty years. All over the park they had the beating of their direct opponents and Ciaran Brady certainly had his homework done on the opposition. Declan C Reilly was the main architect from midfield while up front JP Reilly and Declan Farrell made notable impacts. Captain Francis Kavanagh and Gary Murtagh were once again solid and Kavanagh did a great job on picking up the roaming Clendenning. Colmcille will be eager to retain their crown in 2009 but with another championship campaign numerous teams will feel they can bring down the north Longford men and snatch the Sean Connolly Cup.
